When you rent a motorhome through Campr, a deposit of NOK 15,000 is reserved on your payment card. It is not a payment but a security: if you return the vehicle without damage, the full amount is released. If the amount cannot be reserved, it is charged instead – and refunded to you the same way once the rental has ended without damage.
If damage does occur, NOK 15,000 is also the most you will pay. With Campr Plus at NOK 189 per day, the deductible is halved to NOK 7,500, and you are compensated if your holiday has to be cut short. The vehicle is covered by the owner's comprehensive insurance, so the deposit is all you need to think about.
Deposits, deductibles and insurance are among the hardest things to compare when renting a motorhome or caravan – especially in a country you are visiting. Here we explain the difference, what to check before you book, and how it works with Campr.
In short
- Deposit with Campr: NOK 15,000 is reserved on your card and released when the vehicle is returned without damage
- Maximum deductible: NOK 15,000 per damage
- Campr Plus: NOK 189 per day – deductible NOK 7,500 and compensation for an interrupted holiday. Can be added any time before check-in
- Insurance: All hosts on Campr are required to have comprehensive insurance on their vehicle
- Help: Norwegian customer service with real people you can call
What is the difference between a deposit and a deductible?
The deposit is a security during the rental. With Campr, the amount is reserved on your payment card, so the money is not taken from your account. If the reservation is not possible, the amount is charged instead. If you return the vehicle in the condition you received it, without damage, the reservation is released – or the money is refunded if it was charged.
The deductible (excess) is what you pay yourself if damage occurs during the rental. How much you pay depends on the extent of the damage.
So the key question before you book is not just how big the deposit is, but: What is the most I could end up paying if something happens?
What to compare between rental options
- Maximum deductible per damage: On some rental platforms, the deductible for renters can be NOK 16,000–30,000 with standard cover. Check the amount before you pay.
- The cost of reducing the deductible: Many offer extra cover. Look at the price per day, how much the deductible actually drops, and what else is included.
- Whether the deposit is reserved or charged: A reservation does not tie up your money the same way a charge does.
- Total price from the start: If fees and extras only appear at checkout, comparing becomes difficult.
- Help when something goes wrong: Can you call and talk to a person, or do you only get a chatbot?
- Documentation at pick-up and return: Digital check-in and check-out with photos make it clear what was already there.

How do deposit and insurance work with Campr?
All hosts on Campr are required to have comprehensive insurance on the motorhome or caravan they rent out. If damage occurs during your rental, the owner's insurance is used, and Campr handles the settlement with the owner.
As a renter, you only need to think about the NOK 15,000 deposit:
- No damage: The reservation is released, or the money is refunded if it was charged.
- Damage: The deductible is up to NOK 15,000 depending on the extent of the damage, and you never pay more than NOK 15,000 per damage.
What is included in Campr Plus?
Campr Plus costs NOK 189 per day and gives you two benefits:
- Lower deductible: The deductible per damage is reduced from NOK 15,000 to NOK 7,500. The deposit is still NOK 15,000.
- Compensation for an interrupted holiday: If the rental has to end early because the vehicle cannot be used due to damage, you receive NOK 1,500 per day for the remaining rental days.
Forgot to add Campr Plus when you booked? You can add it afterwards, but it must be done before check-in.
When does Campr Plus pay off?
Example: If you rent a motorhome for seven days, Campr Plus costs NOK 1,323. If damage occurs that triggers the full deductible, you save NOK 7,500. If your holiday also has to end with three days left, you receive NOK 4,500 in compensation.
Campr Plus is especially useful if you are new to motorhomes, will drive narrow roads and mountain passes, or are travelling with family and have little room for a holiday that goes wrong.
What to do if something happens on the trip
- Make sure everyone is safe, and set out a warning triangle if needed.
- Take photos of the damage and the situation.
- Contact the host and Campr right away. Campr is Norwegian, and with us you talk to real people who answer the phone and help you move on.
- Report it at check-out when you return the vehicle, so everything is documented.

How to avoid losing your deposit
- Do a thorough check-in: Photograph scratches and dents together with the host before you drive off.
- Learn the height of the vehicle: Many damages happen under bridges and in parking garages.
- Retract the awning and close roof hatches before driving.
- Return the vehicle as agreed: clean, with an emptied toilet and the right fuel level.
- Complete the check-out in the app together with the host.
