In Norway you can stay overnight in a campervan at campsites, motorhome parking areas, rest areas and along many public roads, as long as there is no sign saying otherwise. The Norwegian right to roam gives you a lot of freedom, but it does not allow you to drive off-road, and you must keep your distance from houses and cabins. Popular areas often have local rules, so always check the signs before you settle in for the night.

This guide explains where you can legally park and sleep in a campervan in Norway, what the rules actually say, and how to find good spots.

## Quick overview

- **Yes, you can stay overnight in many places:** campsites, motorhome parking areas, rest areas and lay-bys where it is not prohibited.
- **Keep your distance:** at least 150 metres from occupied houses and cabins.
- **Two nights maximum** in the same place without the landowner's permission, except in the mountains and remote areas.
- **No off-road driving:** your vehicle must stay on a road or a prepared surface.
- **Local bans exist:** especially in cities and busy areas such as Lofoten.

## Can you sleep anywhere in a campervan in Norway?

Not anywhere, but in a lot of places. Norway's right to roam (allemannsretten) gives everyone the right to move through and stay overnight in uncultivated land (utmark): forests, mountains, beaches and other open countryside. For campervan travellers this means you can generally park and sleep along public roads in the countryside, as long as no sign prohibits it and you are not in anyone's way.

The basic rules are:

- Stay at least 150 metres away from occupied houses and cabins.
- Do not camp on cultivated land such as fields, meadows, gardens or farmyards.
- Stay no more than two nights in the same place without the landowner's permission. The exception is the high mountains and areas far from any buildings.
- Take all your rubbish with you and leave no trace.

The key point for campervans: the right to roam does not give you the right to drive into the terrain. Off-road driving with motor vehicles is prohibited in Norway, so your vehicle must stay on a road, a car park or another prepared surface.

## Free camping in Norway – what is allowed?

Free overnight stays in nature are one of the biggest advantages of travelling Norway by campervan. You can wake up next to a fjord, a mountain lake or the edge of a forest without paying for the spot. The condition is that you are legally parked and considerate.

Places that typically work well:

- Gravel areas and lay-bys along quieter roads
- Rest areas (rasteplasser), unless a sign sets a time limit or bans overnight stays
- Trailhead car parks, if the signs allow it

Private roads may be closed to parking. If you see a barrier or signs saying "Parkering forbudt" (no parking) or "Camping forbudt" (no camping), respect them. Also note that from 15 April to 15 September it is prohibited to light fires in or near forests, unless it obviously cannot cause a fire.

## Campsites – when are they worth it?

If you want electricity, showers and toilets, a campsite is the easiest option. Norway has campsites all over the country, from small family-run sites by the fjord to large sites near cities and major attractions.

- **Cost:** roughly €10–30 per night for a campervan pitch, depending on location and season.
- **Facilities:** toilets, showers, electricity, and often a waste disposal point and shared kitchen.

Campsites are ideal when you stay several nights, need to charge batteries, do laundry or just want more comfort. In high season it is wise to book ahead or arrive early in the day.

## Motorhome parking and service points

Many municipalities, farms and harbours offer dedicated motorhome parking (bobilparkering). These spots are often central or scenic, and simpler and cheaper than a campsite. Some have electricity and water, others are just a place to park.

Grey water and toilet waste must always be emptied at designated disposal points, never in nature or in roadside drains. Plan where to empty and refill water a few days ahead, especially if you spend most nights in the countryside.

## Parking rules for campervans

You cannot park everywhere. Avoid:

- Private land without permission
- City centres and areas where motorhome parking is restricted
- No-parking zones and areas with time limits

Municipalities can regulate motorhome parking, and many cities only allow it in designated areas. In Lofoten and other busy destinations, several places have introduced restrictions on overnight parking. Read the signs carefully, even when you arrive late in the evening.

## Best places to stay overnight

- **Viewpoints and rest areas** along the National Tourist Routes, where overnight stays are allowed
- **Fjord areas** with motorhome parking at harbours and small villages
- **Designated motorhome parking** run by municipalities and farms
- **Campsites** when you need power and facilities

## Tips for a good night in your campervan

- Find your spot before it gets late, especially in high season.
- Park on level ground and use levelling blocks if needed.
- Do not disturb neighbours, grazing animals or other people using the area.
- Do not set up tables, chairs or awnings at rest areas and car parks.
- Keep the area clean and follow local rules.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is wild camping in a campervan legal in Norway?

Yes, with limits. You can stay overnight along public roads and in open areas in the countryside unless a sign prohibits it. Stay at least 150 metres from occupied houses and cabins, and keep your vehicle on a road or prepared surface, never out in the terrain.

How long can I stay in one place?

Under the right to roam, you can generally stay two nights in the same place without the landowner's permission. Rest areas and car parks often have shorter time limits shown on signs. Local rules always take priority, so check the signs wherever you stop.

Do I have to pay to stay overnight in a campervan?

Not always. Many spots in the countryside are free. Campsites and motorhome parking areas usually charge, often around €10–30 per night depending on location, season and facilities. Electricity, showers and waste disposal may cost extra.

Can I stay overnight in a campervan in Lofoten?

Yes, but several places in Lofoten restrict overnight parking because of heavy visitor numbers. Plan to use campsites or marked motorhome spots, and respect no-parking signs. It makes the trip easier for you and for the people who live there.

Is it safe to sleep in a campervan in Norway?

Norway is generally considered a safe country to travel in, and campervan holidays are very common. Use common sense: lock the door at night, keep valuables out of sight and choose spots where you feel comfortable.
