# Best Campervan Routes in Norway

Norway is one of the best countries in the world for a road trip. Deep fjords, dramatic mountain passes and long stretches of coastline mean the drive itself is often the highlight. Exploring these routes with a campervan gives you the freedom to stop wherever the view is best, cook with a fjord outside the window and travel at your own pace.

Below are four of the most rewarding campervan routes in Norway, with what to expect, when to go and practical tips for each.

## Quick overview

- **Best for:** Road trips and scenic drives
- **Travel type:** Campervan or motorhome
- **Best season:** May to September
- **Highlights:** Fjords, mountain passes, coastal roads and island hopping

## Atlantic Ocean Road

One of Norway’s most famous scenic drives. The Atlantic Ocean Road is only about 8 km long, but it crosses a series of low islands and skerries over eight bridges between Kristiansund and Molde. The curving Storseisundet Bridge is the one you have seen in photos.

The route is part of Norway’s National Tourist Routes and has several rest areas and viewpoints where you can park and walk out along the sea. On a stormy autumn day, waves crash right onto the road. On a calm summer evening, it is perfect for fishing from the shore.

**Highlights:**

- Ocean views
- The Storseisundet Bridge
- Viewpoints and walking paths along the sea

**Tip:** Combine it with a drive to Molde or Kristiansund, or continue south towards Trollstigen and Geiranger.

## Geirangerfjord

A must-visit on any Norway trip. Geirangerfjord is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and it is easy to see why. Steep mountainsides drop straight into the fjord, and waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters pour down the cliffs.

Driving in is half the experience. From the north you come down the Eagle Road (Ørnesvingen), which has hairpin bends and a viewpoint high above the fjord. From the south you can take the toll road up to Dalsnibba for one of the highest fjord views in Europe.

**Highlights:**

- The Seven Sisters waterfall
- Eagle Road viewpoint
- Dalsnibba
- Fjord cruises from Geiranger

**Tip:** The roads around Geiranger are narrow and busy in high season. Drive early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and use the passing places (møteplasser).

## Lofoten Islands Route

Perfect for Arctic landscapes. The E10 runs the length of Lofoten, linking white-sand beaches, sharp mountain peaks and colourful fishing villages such as Henningsvær, Reine and Hamnøy. Distances are short, but you will stop constantly.

You can drive in from the mainland or take the car ferry from Bodø to Moskenes. In summer you get the midnight sun, and outside the summer months there is a good chance of northern lights.

**Highlights:**

- Beaches such as Haukland and Uttakleiv
- Mountain hikes
- Fishing villages with traditional rorbuer

**Tip:** Lofoten is popular and some areas have restrictions on overnight parking. Plan to use campsites or marked motorhome spots, and book the ferry in advance in summer.

## Trollstigen Road

One of the most dramatic roads in Norway. Trollstigen (“the Troll’s Ladder”) climbs a steep mountainside in eleven hairpin bends, with the Stigfossen waterfall running alongside the road. At the top, viewing platforms jut out over the valley.

The road is a mountain pass and is closed in winter. It usually opens in late May or June, depending on snow.

**Highlights:**

- Eleven hairpin bends
- Stigfossen waterfall
- Viewing platforms at the top

**Tip:** Take it slowly in a campervan, use low gears on the way down and check road status before you set off. Large vehicles may face length restrictions.

## Why choose a campervan for these routes?

With a [campervan rental in Norway](https://campr.no/camper-rental-norway), you can:

- Stop anywhere the view is worth it
- Stay overnight near scenic spots and wake up to fjord views
- Skip hotel bookings and travel without a fixed schedule
- Cook your own meals, which is a real saving in Norway

On Campr you rent directly from private owners across Norway, so you can find a vehicle near your starting point.

## Tips for driving in Norway

- **Expect narrow roads:** many Norwegian roads are narrower than you may be used to, and there is not always room for two vehicles to pass. Slow down, use the passing places and be considerate of oncoming traffic.
- **Drive carefully on mountain roads:** use passing places and low gears on descents.
- **Plan your fuel and charging stops:** stations can be far apart in rural areas.
- **Check weather and road conditions:** mountain passes can close at short notice. Check the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (vegvesen.no) before you set off.
- **Tolls and ferries:** most toll roads and many ferries register your number plate automatically, so you are billed afterwards.
- **Keep headlights on:** this is required at all times, also in daylight.
- **Respect speed limits:** most country roads are 80 km/h or lower, and fines are high.
