The best scenic drives in Norway by campervan include the Atlantic Ocean Road, Trollstigen, the Geirangerfjord, Lofoten and the Sognefjellet mountain road. Many of them are part of Norway's National Tourist Routes, with rest areas and viewpoints designed for travellers. In a campervan you can stop wherever the view is best and stay overnight along the way, at your own pace.

Here are ten drives worth planning a Norway road trip around – from famous classics to quieter routes in the north and in the mountains of eastern Norway.

## Quick overview

- **Best for:** road trips and nature by campervan or motorhome
- **Best season:** June to September – several mountain roads close in winter
- **Highlights:** fjords, mountain passes, coastal roads and island hopping by ferry
- **Tip:** check road conditions with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (vegvesen.no) before crossing the mountains

## Why is Norway so good for scenic road trips?

Norway packs remarkably varied scenery into short distances: fjords, waterfalls, high mountains and a long coastline with islands and beaches. The government has selected 18 roads as National Tourist Routes (Nasjonale turistveger). Along them you will find architect-designed rest areas, toilets and viewpoints that make it easy to stop with a campervan.

Outside the cities traffic is usually light. Roads are well signposted but often narrower and more winding than many visitors expect, so allow plenty of time.

Four of the drives below – the Atlantic Ocean Road, Trollstigen, Geirangerfjord and Lofoten – are covered in more detail in our guide to the [best campervan routes in Norway](https://stories.campr.no/en/post/best-campervan-routes-in-norway?hsLang=en).

## 1. Atlantic Ocean Road

The Atlantic Ocean Road is one of Norway's most famous drives. The road itself is only about 8 km long, but it crosses islets and skerries over eight bridges between Kristiansund and Molde. It is part of the Atlantic Ocean Road National Tourist Route.

Driving here feels almost like floating on the sea. Come in clear weather for the best views – or in a storm if you want to see waves crashing over the road.

## 2. Trollstigen

Trollstigen ("the Troll's Ladder") climbs a steep mountainside in eleven hairpin bends, with the Stigfossen waterfall right beside the road. At the top, viewing platforms look out over the valley. The road is part of the Geiranger–Trollstigen National Tourist Route.

Trollstigen is closed in winter and usually opens in late May or June. Drive slowly, use low gears on the way down and be aware of length restrictions for large vehicles.

## 3. Lofoten

The E10 through Lofoten is a National Tourist Route linking white-sand beaches, sharp peaks and fishing villages such as Henningsvær, Reine and Hamnøy. Distances are short, but you will stop constantly.

Some roads are narrow, so take your time. Lofoten is busy in summer and several places restrict overnight parking. Plan to use campsites or marked motorhome spots.

## 4. Geirangerfjord

The Geirangerfjord is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From the north you descend the Eagle Road (Ørnesvingen) with views high above the fjord; from the south you can take the toll road up to Dalsnibba. Along the way you will see waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters.

Roads around Geiranger are steep, narrow and busy in high season. Drive early or late in the day, and use the passing places (møteplasser).

## 5. Sognefjellet mountain road

The Sognefjellet road (Sognefjellsvegen) between Lom and Gaupne crosses the high mountains next to Jotunheimen and is often described as the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe. You drive past glaciers, snowfields and lakes, far above the tree line.

It is a National Tourist Route and is closed in winter. Even in midsummer it can be cold with snow at the roadside, so keep warm clothes handy.

## 6. Hardanger

Hardanger is known for waterfalls, fjords and fruit orchards. The Hardanger National Tourist Route follows the fjord and shows a gentle, green side of western Norway, with Vøringsfossen among the best-known stops in the area.

In spring the fruit trees along the fjord are in blossom, and in summer you can buy fruit and juice from the farms. It is one of the most relaxing drives in the country.

## 7. Senja

Senja in northern Norway is a quieter alternative to Lofoten, with jagged mountains dropping straight into the sea and small fishing villages. The Senja National Tourist Route runs along the island's outer coast, with viewpoints such as Tungeneset and Bergsbotn.

There are fewer visitors here, and you often have the view to yourself. In summer you get the midnight sun.

## 8. Lysefjord and Ryfylke

The Lysefjord near Stavanger is famous for Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjerag. The Ryfylke National Tourist Route runs through the region, with Preikestolen a short detour away. For an extra adventure, drive the Lysevegen road down to Lysebotn at the head of the fjord, through a series of tight hairpin bends.

Lysevegen is closed in winter and demanding in a large vehicle. Check opening times and any restrictions before you go.

## 9. Rondane

Rondane was Norway's first national park. The Rondane National Tourist Route crosses open mountain plateaus with views of the Rondane massif, and the area is known for wild reindeer.

The drive is quiet and has a completely different feel from the western fjords. It is a good choice if you want a break from the busiest places.

## 10. Helgeland Coast

The Helgeland Coast is one of the longest National Tourist Routes in Norway and combines driving with several ferry crossings. You pass islands, white beaches and landmarks such as Torghatten, the mountain with a hole through it.

The ferries give natural breaks along the way. Check timetables in advance, especially in high season, and allow plenty of time – this is a route for slow travel.

- **Drive slowly:** use passing places and low gears on descents.
- **Keep headlights on:** required at all times, also in daylight.
- **Use the rest areas:** they are built so you can enjoy the view safely.
- **Stay overnight legally:** read [where you can stay overnight in a campervan in Norway](https://stories.campr.no/en/post/where-can-you-stay-overnight-in-a-campervan-in-norway?hsLang=en).
