Summer is the best time to travel Norway by campervan. The mountain roads are open, evenings stay light and north of the Arctic Circle you get the midnight sun. July is the busiest month, so plan your overnight stops in popular areas and be ready for weather that can change quickly.

This guide covers what you need for a great summer campervan trip in Norway: weather, where to go, suggested routes, where to stay and practical tips.

## Quick overview

- **Best period:** June to August, with June and late August the quietest
- **Temperatures:** usually 10–25°C, depending on the region
- **Highlights:** fjords, mountain roads, Lofoten and the midnight sun in the north
- **Remember:** rain gear, warm layers and a plan for overnight stops in July

## Why visit Norway in summer?

In summer the days are long all over Norway, and north of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set for weeks. That gives you more time to drive, hike and enjoy the views – even late in the evening.

Mountain roads that close in winter, such as Trollstigen and the Sognefjellet road, are open. You avoid snow and icy roads, and planning is much easier. That makes summer the best season for first-time campervan travellers.

## What is the weather like in summer?

Summer weather in Norway is usually mild. Temperatures typically range from 10 to 25°C depending on where you are. The coast tends to be cooler, while inland areas can be warmer.

The weather can still change quickly, and western Norway gets a lot of rain. In the mountains it can be cold even in July. Pack rain gear and a warm jumper, and check the forecast as you go. One advantage of a campervan: you can simply drive to where the weather is better.

## Where should you go in summer?

**The fjords:** the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord are both on the UNESCO World Heritage List and among the most spectacular places in the country.

**Lofoten:** beaches, mountains and fishing villages, with the midnight sun for much of the summer. Popular, so plan where to stay.

**Bergen and Stavanger:** good starting points for the western fjords and coastal roads, and both have international airports.

## Benefits of a campervan in summer

With a campervan you are not tied to hotel bookings or fixed times. You travel at your own pace and stop whenever you like.

It combines transport and accommodation in one. In high season, when hotel prices peak, that can mean real savings.

Many of the most beautiful places in Norway are far from cities. A campervan gets you there easily – and lets you stay the night.

## Suggested summer road trip routes

- **Oslo to Bergen:** over the mountains, through valleys and down to the fjords. A classic route with lots of variety.
- **The Atlantic Ocean Road:** a coastal road across islets and skerries between Kristiansund and Molde, easy to combine with Trollstigen and Geiranger.
- **Lofoten:** short distances and endless stops – perfect for a slow, scenic trip.

## Camping and parking in summer

Norway's right to roam (allemannsretten) allows you to stay overnight in many places in the countryside, as long as you follow the basic rules: at least 150 metres from occupied houses and cabins, not on cultivated land, and with your vehicle on a road or prepared surface – never off-road.

There are also campsites all over the country with electricity, water and showers. In July they can fill up, so arrive early in the day or book ahead. Busy areas such as Lofoten restrict overnight parking in several places. ## Practical tips for a summer trip

- **Plan, but stay flexible:** have a rough plan and adjust to the weather and your energy.
- **Refuel in good time:** fuel stations can be far apart in rural areas.
- **Drive early or late:** the most popular roads are quieter outside the middle of the day.
- **Check ferries:** queues can build up in high season.
- **Keep headlights on:** required at all times in Norway, even under the midnight sun.
- **Respect nature:** take your rubbish with you, use waste disposal points and do not light fires in or near forests.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is summer the best time to visit Norway by campervan?

For most travellers, yes. In summer the mountain roads are open, the days are long and the weather is at its most stable. June and late August are often quieter than July, when many Norwegians are on holiday and popular areas get busy.

Do I need to book campsites in advance?

Not always, but in July and in popular areas such as Lofoten and around Geiranger it is wise to book or arrive early in the day. Outside peak season you can usually find a spot without booking.

Is Norway expensive in summer?

Prices are highest in summer, especially for hotels. A campervan can cut costs because it combines transport and accommodation and lets you cook your own meals.

Is wild camping allowed in Norway?

Yes. Under the right to roam you can stay overnight in many places in the countryside if you follow the rules and local signs. Keep at least 150 metres from occupied houses and cabins and never drive off-road. Fires in or near forests are banned from 15 April to 15 September.

Can beginners drive a campervan in Norway in summer?

Yes. Summer offers the easiest driving conditions. Roads are generally well maintained but often narrow, so drive calmly and use the passing places (møteplasser). Start with shorter driving days until you get used to the vehicle.
