Some of the best campsites in Sweden for a motorhome or caravan are Böda Sand on Öland, Pite Havsbad in Piteå, Daftö Resort near Strömstad, Västervik Resort in Småland and Destination Apelviken in Varberg. All five combine a seaside location with plenty of activities and are especially good for families. Here is what each one offers, plus tips for planning a camping trip to Sweden in 2027.

Sweden has a large network of campsites, from simple lakeside pitches to big resorts with water parks and spas. If you are touring Norway in a campervan, Sweden is right next door, and several of these campsites are an easy detour across the border.

## Quick overview

- **Best for:** Families and travellers who want camping plus activities
- **Travel type:** Motorhome, campervan, caravan or a rental cabin on site
- **Best season:** June to August, busiest in July
- **Highlights:** Sandy beaches, archipelagos, water parks and an amusement park
- **Tip:** Book early if you plan to travel in July

## 1. Böda Sand Beach Resort – Öland

Böda Sand sits on the northern tip of the island of Öland and is one of Sweden's most popular campsites, known for its beach that stretches for kilometres. The resort offers a wide range of activities, including a spa, water park, mini golf and sports facilities, making it a good choice for families who want both relaxation and fun in one place.

You reach Öland via the Öland Bridge from Kalmar. The island is flat and great for exploring by bike.

## 2. Pite Havsbad – Piteå

Often called the "Riviera of the North", Pite Havsbad lies on the Gulf of Bothnia in northern Sweden. It has a long sandy beach, a water park, a spa and a golf course. It suits families who want beach life with activities, and anyone who wants to experience the light summer nights of the far north.

If you are travelling in northern Norway, Piteå is a natural cross-border detour from areas such as Narvik or Bodø.

## 3. Daftö Resort – Strömstad

About 5 km from Strömstad, Daftö Resort is a large campsite with many types of accommodation, including cabins, a hotel and a guest harbour. It has its own amusement park, Daftöland, as well as a pool area, restaurants and activities for the whole family.

Strömstad is close to the Norwegian border at Svinesund, roughly two hours' drive from Oslo, so Daftö works well as a short trip or as the first stop on a longer drive down Sweden's west coast.

## 4. Västervik Resort – Småland

Västervik Resort is one of the largest campsites in the Nordic countries. It offers a water park, a climbing park, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. Located on the coast, it gives easy access to the archipelago and the islands offshore.

Småland is known for forests, lakes and small towns, and combines well with Öland, a couple of hours' drive further south.

## 5. Destination Apelviken – Varberg

Apelviken is a seaside campsite about 2 km from the centre of Varberg. It has more than 460 pitches, two restaurants, a heated outdoor pool and activities for children and adults. The beach is also popular with surfers, and Varberg's sights are close by.

## How do you plan a motorhome trip to Sweden?

Sweden is easy to travel by motorhome or caravan. Roads are good, and there are many campsites and motorhome parking areas (called *ställplatser* in Swedish). A few practical tips:

- **Book early:** popular coastal campsites fill up quickly in July. June and August are usually easier.
- **Match the route to your time:** Strömstad and Varberg suit a one-week trip from Oslo. Öland, Småland and Piteå need more time or work best as part of a longer loop.
- **Overnight stops:** Sweden's right of public access (*allemansrätten*) mainly covers walking and tent camping. With a motorhome, use campsites and marked motorhome parking areas.
- **Money:** Sweden uses the Swedish krona (SEK), and cards are accepted almost everywhere.
- **Know your vehicle:** check the height, weight and length of your motorhome before driving narrow roads or into town centres.
