# 10 Days Norway Road Trip in a Campervan

Ten days is enough to see the highlights of southern Norway by campervan. A classic loop starts in Oslo, heads north through Lillehammer to Geirangerfjord, follows the fjords to Bergen, continues south to Stavanger and Pulpit Rock, and returns to Oslo. You get fjords, mountain roads, two of Norway's most charming cities and plenty of time to stop along the way.

Below is a day-by-day itinerary with highlights, driving tips and what to plan for in advance.

## Quick overview

- **Duration:** 10 days
- **Route:** Oslo – Lillehammer – Geiranger – Bergen – Stavanger – Oslo
- **Best for:** First-time visitors to Norway
- **Best season:** June to early September, when the mountain roads are open
- **Highlights:** Fjords, mountain passes, Bryggen in Bergen and Pulpit Rock

## Day 1–2: Oslo to Lillehammer

Start in Oslo, the capital, where you pick up your campervan. Spend some time in the city before you leave: the waterfront, the Opera House and the museums on Bygdøy are all worth a visit. Then drive north to Lillehammer, about 2–3 hours along Lake Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake.

This first stretch is on good roads with gentle scenery, which makes it perfect for getting used to the vehicle before the mountain roads start.

**Highlights:**

- Oslo's waterfront and city centre
- Countryside views along Lake Mjøsa
- Lillehammer, host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, and the open-air museum Maihaugen

## Day 3–4: Lillehammer to Geirangerfjord

Continue through the Gudbrandsdalen valley towards Geirangerfjord, one of Norway's best-known fjords and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a long but very scenic drive, with mountain roads and waterfalls along the way. Plan two nights in the area so you have a full day to explore.

We cover Geiranger, the Eagle Road and Dalsnibba in more detail in our guide to the [best campervan routes in Norway](https://stories.campr.no/en/post/best-campervan-routes-in-norway?hsLang=en).

**Highlights:**

- Viewpoints over Geirangerfjord
- Waterfalls and mountain roads
- Fjord cruises and ferry crossings

**Tip:** The mountain roads into Geiranger are closed in winter and usually open in late May or June. Check road status on vegvesen.no before you set off.

## Day 5–6: Geirangerfjord to Bergen

Drive south towards Bergen, often called the gateway to the fjords. The route crosses several fjords, so expect ferry crossings and stops at viewpoints. Split the drive over two days if you can – there is a lot to see along the way.

In Bergen, park the campervan and explore on foot: the colourful wooden houses of Bryggen, the fish market and the view from Mount Fløyen are all within walking distance of the centre.

**Highlights:**

- Fjord crossings by ferry
- Coastal and fjord roads
- Bryggen and the city of Bergen

![Colourful wooden houses at Bryggen in Bergen](https://stories.campr.no/hs-fs/hubfs/Imported_Blog_Media/41fa34_277405354c804a6f8b6471b7343e5a4b~mv2-1.jpg?width=1080&height=1350&name=41fa34_277405354c804a6f8b6471b7343e5a4b~mv2-1.jpg)

## Day 7–8: Bergen to Stavanger

From Bergen, head south along the coast to Stavanger. The E39 coastal route includes ferry crossings and island scenery. Stavanger is a good base for one of Norway's most famous hikes: Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), a flat cliff 604 metres above the Lysefjord.

The hike is roughly 8 km return and takes most people around 4 hours. Start early in summer to avoid the crowds, and bring good shoes and rain gear.

**Highlights:**

- Scenic coastal drive with ferry crossings
- Hiking to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)
- Stavanger's old town and harbour

## Day 9–10: Stavanger to Oslo

Return to Oslo to complete the loop. You can take a different route back to see more of the country – either along the southern coast via Kristiansand, or inland through the mountains. Both options take a full day of driving, so split the journey with a night along the way.

**Highlights:**

- Mountain routes or the southern coast
- Flexible stops along the way
- Ending your trip in Oslo

## Why do this road trip by campervan?

A campervan gives you a flexible way to see a lot of Norway in a short time:

- No hotel bookings or fixed schedule
- Stop at viewpoints, beaches and small villages whenever you like
- Lower accommodation costs – an advantage in an expensive country
- Cook your own meals with a fjord view

On Campr you rent a [campervan in Norway](https://campr.no/camper-rental-norway) directly from private owners, so you can find a vehicle close to Oslo or wherever your trip starts.

## What does a 10-day campervan trip in Norway cost?

The main costs are the vehicle rental, fuel, ferries, tolls, campsites and food. Rental prices vary a lot with season, vehicle size and owner, so compare a few vehicles for your dates. Cooking in the campervan and staying at a mix of campsites and simpler motorhome spots keeps the budget down. Over 10 days, a campervan is often cheaper than combining a rental car with hotels.

## Tips for your 10-day road trip

- **Book early:** campervans are in high demand in July and August.
- **Plan fuel and food stops:** services can be far apart in rural areas.
- **Check the weather and road status:** mountain conditions change quickly.
- **Use campsites or legal parking spots** for overnight stays, and follow local signs.
- **Don't overplan:** distances take longer than they look on the map, and the best moments are often unplanned stops.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is 10 days enough for a road trip in Norway?

Yes, 10 days is enough to see the highlights of southern Norway, including Geirangerfjord, Bergen and Pulpit Rock. You will not see the whole country – northern Norway and Lofoten need a separate trip – but you get a good mix of fjords, mountains and cities without rushing.

Is it easy to drive this route in a campervan?

Mostly, yes. The main roads are well maintained, but some mountain and fjord roads are narrow and steep. Drive calmly, use the passing places and use low gears on descents. A compact campervan is easier to handle than a large motorhome on these roads.

Can you park a campervan anywhere in Norway?

No. Overnight parking is allowed in many places, but rules vary and some popular areas only allow it at campsites. Always follow local signs, use designated motorhome spots or campsites, and never drive off the road into nature. Leave no trace when you move on.

When is the best time for this road trip?

June to early September is the best time. The mountain roads to Geiranger are usually open from late May or June, the days are long and all ferries and attractions are running. July is the busiest month, so June and late August are good alternatives.
